Hems and pole pockets

A hem folds a banner edge back for strength. A pole pocket is a sleeve along an edge that a pole slides through.

A raw cut banner edge can fray or tear under tension. A hem folds about an inch of the edge back and welds or sews it, giving the grommets something solid to hold.

A pole pocket is a larger fold, open at the ends, that a pole, dowel or pipe slides through. They are used for banners hung from light poles, flags hung from a bar, and anything that should hang flat and straight without ties.

Sizing a pole pocket

Tell us the diameter of the pole. The pocket needs to be a bit bigger than that so the pole slides in, and the fold uses up some of the banner's height, so the artwork has to allow for it.

Pockets can go on the top only, or top and bottom so a second pole keeps the banner from flapping.
